In the United States federal system of government, state and local officials play an important role in determining public policy. These decisions often have important consequences for our everyday lives. However, it is not often clear which level of government should make a particular policy decision. The purpose of this study, in turn, is to explore the role that American's envision for their state and local governments and to identify the specific responsibilities that American's believe each level of government should have.
